Tiles from the Emamzadeh Yahya at Varamin in Doha

The video From across the Gulf: Tiles from the Emamzadeh Yahya at Varamin in Doha is a short film realized by MIA Curatorial and Digital asset teams as a collaboration to the online exhibition project The Emamzadeh Yahya at Varamin: An Online Exhibition of a Living Iranian Shrine, curated by Dr Keelan Overton and to be launched online in Fall 2024.

The project seeks to document the history of this religious site in Iran, still visited by pilgrims nowadays, and to account of its more recent history. In fact, during the second half of the 19th century, the interior walls of the shrine have been completely stripped of their beautiful tilework, with pieces now scattered today all around the globe in different institutions.

The video made by MIA aims to present the tiles from the Emamzadeh Yahya at Varamin in our collection, describe, and handle them to give the online audience a better sense of the materiality and beauty of these objects, while contributing in mapping the dispersal of the tilework decoration from the shrine to world.
